Addresses on Documents

02/11/2017

UCP 600 sub-article 14 (j) states that when the addresses of the beneficiary and the applicant appear in any stipulated document, they need not be the same as those stated in the documentary credit or in any other stipulated document, but must be within the same country as the respective addresses mentioned in the documentary credit. [Emphasis added]

It goes on to clarify that contact details in respect of the beneficiary's and the applicant's address can be disregarded. Such details would include email, telephonic and fax.

An exception is when the address and contact details of the applicant appear on a transport document as part of the consignee or notify party details. In such circumstances, they must be as stated in the documentary credit. It should be noted that this sub-article draws no distinction between when the documentary credit requests such data to appear and when it does not.

Addresses are additionally covered in the ISBP 745 transport paragraphs, wherein it is stated that when multimodal transport documents, bills of lading or non-negotiable sea waybills are to indicate the name, address and contact details of a delivery agent or words of similar effect, at or for the place of final destination or port of discharge, the address need not be one that is located at the place of destination or port of discharge or within the same country as that of the place of destination or port of discharge.
